One of the last walks before winter comes

The Bike Path Beside The River Where I Often Walk And Ride My Bicycle

I decided to walk down to the bicycle trail that runs along the side of our scenic river here where we live — I decided to take one of the last long walks I will be able to do this year because after Fall has flown winter will be on us and I will not be able to walk or to ride my bicycle as much as I can when the weather is warm.

Some of the trees along the path seem to be getting a little tinge of orange and brown around the edges now — a sure sign of what is to come.

The big fat red Fox Squirrel that has lived along that trail for years now took an opportunity to run in front of me and cross the trail from the wooded area on the right to the wooded area of my left.  The squirrel was beautiful as always and seemed to me to be big as a cat with his big fluffy tail switching back and forth.  In my imagination I could almost see him smiling at me as he went foraging for nuts or whatever he could find to drag back to this lair.

The weather was becoming cooler — kind of like air conditioning — a lot different from the near 100-degree temperatures of August — a refreshing change — the air seemed to be really fresh and pure — a delight to breathe deeply.

I paced along — sometimes jogging for a few dozen feet and then reverting to a rather fast kind of walk — alternating between jogging and walking — I am 76-years-old now and I cannot run for long periods of time like when I was a younger man — but I do what I can and I thoroughly enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the woods and the river — I enjoy all this kind of stuff pretty much at all seasons of the year.

It is definitely refreshing to body, mind and spirit to get away from the confines of the house and the city streets once in a while and to get out alone in the vastness of Nature — the squirrels — the birds all getting ready to fly somewhere warmer — the occasional splash of a fish in the river — the whooshing sound of the shallow rapids down by the low dam — the startled long-legged whooping crane that takes flight with a squawk that might be reminiscent of a pterodactyl or something — it’s all good — all a flood of wonder and awe — a feast for the eyes — healing to the body, mind and soul — joy — joy — the joy of experience the very sensations of living!
